Going Back to the Factory in the 'New Normal': A Guide

As businesses have started reopening amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, we think it’s important that we share with you the new UK government guidelines to ensure safety and support your employees’ health and well-being during these difficult times . This guide provides people who work in or run factories, plants and warehouses a practical framework to think about what needs to be done to continue, or restart operations safely during a COVID-19 pandemic. You can download the full pdf version of the guidelines here.

The government is clear that employees should not be forced into an unsafe work environment. Employers have a legal obligation to protect their workers and others from health and safety risks. Although we cannot completely eliminate the risk of the coronavirus, employers need to do everything that is reasonably practicable to minimise them, by taking preventive measures:

Employers must share the results of their risk assessment with their employees, and consider publishing it on their websites. Here is a copy of the notice you should display in your workplace to show that you complied with this guidance.

Furthermore, Section 5 of the government guidelines enumerated the detailed steps employers must comply in cleaning their workplace:

5.1. Before reopening, to ensure that any site or area that has been closed or partially operated is clean and ready to restart
5.2. Keeping the workplace clean to avoid transmission by touching contaminated surfaces
5.3. Hygiene (handwashing, sanitation facilities and toilets), to help all employees maintain good hygiene through the working day
5.4. Changing rooms and showers to minimise the risk of transmission
5.5. Handling goods, merchandise, other materials and onsite vehicles
